sandy has left her mark on the east coast. millions are spending another night without power. >> reporter: tonight officials are asking the public for patience as the work begins of preparing the damage from sandy. among the top priorities, restoring electricity and getting mass transit back on track. hurricane sandy hit new jersey's long beach island hard. homes in the beach front town were flooded or destroyed. boat littered the streets. >> we'll assess the damages and rebuild. that's way it works in new jersey. >> reporter: new york city was crippled bit storm. subway and traffic tunnels were filled with salt water. no word on when the city's famous subway service will resume. an entire community burned to the ground in queens as hurricane-force winds spread flames from house to house. for a second manhattan is a

tale of two cities. one of many destructive aftermaths of sandy's rampage. bullpen the disaster is also bringing out the best in people. the restaurant lost power, instead of letting the food go bad he cooked it up engave it away. >> cooking just like we normally would. >> reporter: the optimism to rebuild here and along the shore is the pain of what was lost. >> we'll rebuild it. no question in my mind. but for those of us who are my age, it won't by the same. it'll be different. because many of the iconic things that made it what it was are now gone and washed into the ocean. >> reporter: with the price tag in the tens of billions of dollars. another concern is cellular phone service. many towers in the storm zone are now operating with generators. who those run out of gas there will be no cell phone service.

reporting live in new york, i'm randall pinkston, back to you. >> it's hard to look at with so much devastation. it is almost impossible just to cover it all. >> we want to slow down and walk you through some of the areas that were the hardest hit. we'll start in new jersey where one resident said it was like someone turned on a giant faucet. all day police, fire and national guard crews pulled boat loads of people from flooded homes. >> i have a sliding door. trees toppled over. my bed was floating. >> within a matter of minutes i think where the basement got flooded. there's an apartment down there that's destroyed. and basically we're just waiting for this rescue. >> now making matters worse, the only fire station was also flooded. >> next, summerspoint, new

jersey. evacuated ahead of sandy. they knew what they were doing. it could be days before they're allowed to go back home. here's why. the storm surge filled the streets with water. some homes underwater. others simply knocked from their foundations. boats of all types washed ashore coming to rest on what was once dry land. a nearby pier with an amusement park, completely destroyed by the waves. new jersey state officials say entire beaches have disappeared. >> from one point to the other, 93 miles north it breezy point, new york. water was not the only force of nature. the beach community of breezy point, new york could only watch as an entire neighborhood burned. firefighter history to drag their water hoses through flooded streets as high winds pushed the flames from house to house. and the emotional toll could prove to be as high as the

financial one. >> it's just very upsetting. if anybody's out there, say your prayers for us. that's what you can do. >> anywhere from 80 to 100 homes burned in breezy point. a place many police and firefighters call home. once fire crews were able to get out into the flooded streets it didn't even matter. many of the fire hydrants were under 3 to 4 feet of water. >> then there's the symbol of civilization these days, the new york city subway system. seven tunnels linking manhattan to brooklyn and queens are flooded. the signals, switches, third rail, all covered with salt water and sludge. mta is calling it the biggest disaster the system as ever faced. plywood and sandbags were no match for the storm. >> there was no way to prepare that would have kept water out?

>> no. no way. how are you going to stop water. it goes where it wants to go. full to the top. >> crews are now pumping water around the clock trying to at least get those tunnel emptied out. new york says the bus almost will be operational by tomorrow and it will run for free until the subway is back up and running. it could be a while before things get back to normal at laguardia international. it looked more like a lake. with gates and runways completely submerged. the storm prompted thousands of flight cancellations. >> we'll take a one more look with a little perspective from a math class you may have taken years and years ago. remember number sequences? it's a sequence that can be
